Our Music Outreach Program

Hans Christian Anderson once said, "Where words fail, music speaks."

At the KEYS Program, we experience the power of music every day through our Music Outreach programs. Whether singing a silly echo song with a child undergoing chemotherapy treatments, dancing in the halls of the hospital with IV in one hand and tambourine in the other, or playing a lullaby while a child is being rocked to sleep in their parent's arms...KEYS is there delivering music, comfort, hope and smiles, when words are just not enough.

Our award-winning team of musicians, music educators and music therapists share their gifts to assist children through some of their toughest times, bringing music to the bedside of kids in the hospital, at home or in hospice care.

Music Outreach Compared to Music Therapy

We LOVE the important clinical work music therapists do in the field!  Our programs are designed to enhance and support the work of Music Therapist in the field through advocacy, education and outreach.

What is Music Therapy?

According to the American Music Therapy Association, the definition of music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music Therapy is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. After assessing the strengths and needs of each client, the qualified music therapist provides the indicated treatment including creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music. Through musical involvement in the therapeutic context, clients' abilities are strengthened and transferred to other areas of their lives. Music therapy also provides avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves in words. Research in music therapy supports its effectiveness in many areas such as: overall physical rehabilitation and facilitating movement, increasing people's motivation to become engaged in their treatment, providing emotional support for clients and their families, and providing an outlet for expression of feelings.

What is Music Outreach?

Our Music Outreach programs are designed as a compliment to the amazing work Music Therapists and Child Life Specialist are doing in the field! We do this by:

  • Distributing our Music Toolkits to children's hospitals and sites, sharing information on the benefits of music, providing links to research and referring them to the American Music Therapy Association website for resources and music therapy programs in their area.   We also provide informational videos presented by our board certified music therapist that shares information on the benefits of music for parents and medical staff.
  • Broadcasting educational interactive and entertaining music programming on our KEYS Kids Network that provides additional quality of life support to patients. We will work hand-in-hand with music therapists in the field to provide their patients opportunities to share music they are creating and recording on the KEYS Kids Network, enabling patients to share their music with their peers and helping them to feel less isolated.
  • Hospital Music Outreach Visits by our award-winning musicians, educators, music therapists and mental health counselors who perform uplifting songs, involving patients in the music making, and inspiring patients to find their passion and follow their dreams. Our music outreach visits are special events designed to engage and entertain children of all ages and to help support and enhance the clinical work the music therapist do with their patients every day.
